Dance Hoop (dvd incluced-workout kit) Review

Dance Hoop

I purchased this kit from Amazon rather than through the manufacturer. The DVD is unreadable and without the DVD, the hoop itself is useless. Amazon does not respond to any inquiries about replacing the DVD. The kit is available from at least a dozen other online stores. My advice is to research prices on Amazon, but purchase product elsewhere.

Basic Aerobics (2004) Review

Basic Aerobics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this video about a year ago in a local department store. I watched it at home, and needed to stop it after only a few minutes. The instructor was not the type of person that I would like leading a fitness routine. I didn't liked the choreography of the moves, and the people in the backround where doing different moves. So there was no way for me to ever try even doing the fitness routine. I was lucky to sell it to another person! I would not recommand buying this video!

Bellydance Fitness for Weight Loss featuring Rania: Cardio Shimmy Review

Bellydance Fitness for Weight Loss featuring Rania: Cardio Shimmy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're not familiar with the Bellydancer Rania and her Bellydance Fitness for Weight Loss series, she is an AFAA certified Fitness Instructor and internationally renowned bellydancer. Her four part workout series fuses bellydance moves with a variety of different Western musical rhythms in her belief that bellydance can be done to any kind of music. With soundtracks not always coming off as authentic sounding as one may like, you'll have to use your imagination a bit when you hear the `Disneyesque' and sometimes cartoonish sounding strains of Hip Hop, Salsa, and R & B. The Bellydance Fitness for Weight Loss series are a set of fun workouts and a great way to interject life into a dull and stale workout routine.

Before beginning each workout it's important to keep in mind what these are -- workouts. Although you will learn some bellydance, as all of the routines are nearly completely comprised of bellydance moves, don't expect to buy this DVD and have it be your one-stop shopping for instruction and workout. They haven't made anything like that yet. The pacing required for instruction is way too slow to get your heart rate up for a cardiovascular or fat burning workout. Rania does a very good job of creating routines with moves using similar muscle groups, starting with a slower tempo to teach the move and then returning quickly to full tempo, layering all the movements together to create an interesting routine. Lots of repetition will give you plenty of great bellydance practice.

Each one of the four follows a similar format and vary only in specific content and theme. Cardio Shimmy features the signature shimmies that are the hallmark all good bellydance performances. This workout uses a variety of these high-tempo, and high-energy bellydance moves including a calf-building one called a chu chu. It's one workout guaranteed to get your heart-rate up as quickly as you can wiggle your hips, buns, thighs, and shoulders. The Bonus section of this disc includes two performances, Rania's Techno Drum Solo and Rania's veil dance in traditional style, that later helped to form the "Bellydance Divas" CD as well as the "Waist Sculpting" workout that later became one 10 minute segment of "Bellydance Fitness for Weight Loss: Daily Quickies...5 Ten Minute Workouts."

The workouts are set in a studio and Rania is backed up by a small group of dancers in matching workout attire w/ hip scarves -- similar in look and feel of the Crunch workout series but without all those annoying logos. The back up dancer's bodies are all variations on different female body types with some being curvy and some skinny, and at least one should look how your body could look if it were in a little better, but not rock hard, shape.

Each of the four workouts has a warm up of roughly5 minutes. 20 minutes is spent on each disc devoted to instruction and routines. All four finish with a cool down and stretch segment of approximately 5 minutes in length. My biggest complaint is that I wish workouts were longer in length. 30 minutes just isn't enough for me to keep the fat molecules at bay. I would rather the workout be an hour in length and I could always quit part way through on days I have only 30-40 minutes to workout. Also, studies show that the body does not even begin to burn fat until after 20-30 minutes of sustained cardiovascular activity.

Not a lot of explanation is given to the individual bellydance moves but nearly everything is done in half-time to start before moving up to full tempo. Rania's voiceover often gives pointers as to how the moves are done but one would need to either be a little bit familiar with bellydance, or have a dance friendly set of coordination skills. Nearly anyone could eventually pick up most of the bellydance being done on these DVDs with enough patience and practice. Even without doing the moves perfectly you'll still have fun and get a good workout. Only the beginner absolutely new to all forms of dance would be truly lost. Some of the names Rania gives to certain Bellydance moves are different than I've heard them called before but this is common in the dance world where dancers come up with a move and patent the only part people can't `steal' -- the name. Don't let this bother you; it happens in Bellydance, Hip Hop, Salsa, et all. The move is probably the same thing you learned in class just with a different name.

Probably the biggest complaints about Rania's DVDs are concerning her stiffness, often vacant look, and inability to sustain a heartfelt smile. The look and smile I just consider window dressing for a video; I'm certainly more concerned with her ability to dance and teach. As far as her stiffness goes, it does have one advantage here -- a slightly stiff body is actually easier for a beginner to follow because lots of extra movement is distracting to the beginner who is merely trying to get the essence of a move down pat. While it may irritate an intermediate to professional dancer to watch, the beginner will benefit, and although Rania is certainly not the most fluid of dancers, the routines in the bonus section will attest that some, but not all, of her stiffness comes from making the workout moves look simpler. This is, of course, a fitness video for beginners.

In all, each of the four workouts are fun and you'll learn a little bit of dance. I just wish they all were longer.

Bellydance with Zils (2007) Review

Bellydance with Zils
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started learning to play the finger cymbals after I'd been dancing for about a year. I can remember being so frustrated that these tiny musical instruments were so challenging (yet I was determined to learn them as they were so beautiful and such an integral part of Middle Eastern dance). This would have been a great DVD to have back then, as Elsa does a great job of presenting the information so that zil novices can not only understand how to play but can also be comfortable while doing so. She works at speeds that are reasonable and easy to follow, presenting information so that those new to zils are not overwhelmed. This DVD is great for those who've never played zils before and for those dancers familiar with doumbek rhythms who would like to learn some new patterns that will complement, but not mimic, the doumbek's sound.

Here's what you'll find on this DVD:

"Bellydance Rhythms: Zils and Doumbek:" The DVD begins with drummers Raquy Danzinger and Brian Carter joining Elsa for a brief introduction to Middle Eastern rhythms. Together, they offer a very educational mini-class on the differences between the various rhythms and they way they are played on doumbek as opposed to zils. For those of us who are used to playing the doumbek rhythm of dums and teks on our zils, this is a great opportunity to understand new ways to play the patterns.

"Tips and Technique:" When a dancer first slips zils onto her (or his!) fingers, they can feel unwheildy and alien. We are taught to move our hands with grace and ease, but the addition of these instruments can quickly lead to frustration as a dancer must now learn to hold them and wear them properly. In the "tips and technique" section of the DVD, Elsa shares some wonderful secrets that will make the addition of zils far less daunting. For the novice dancer, this section is invaluable as Elsa covers everything from how to wear the zils and what type of elastic to use to the different sizes and materials of zils. For finger cymbal veterans, this serves as an excellent refresher course and will definitely have a few new ideas, too. She also explains her technique and philosophy, offering an bit of a different perspective on how to play the finger cymbals. This was a nice addition, as it really helps viewers who are familiar with zils (but new to the idea of switching hands and alternating instead of using a leading hand) to understand the method to the various patterns featured later on the DVD.

Rhythm Sections:
After the Tips and Technique section, the DVD moves on to the instructional portion where viewers will learn how to play a variety of Middle Eastern rhythms using finger cymbals. A total of seven rhythms are covered with variations on many of these standard favorites; patterns to accompany Baladi, Maksoum, Saidi, Ciftitelli Masmoudi, Rumba, and Karsilama are offered.

Elsa first describes the rhythm and often explains a bit about its history and/or use in Middle Eastern music. The rhythm is then broken down according to counts (Baladi Triples, for example, are described as the familiar: 123 123 123) and Elsa demonstrates it very slowly. Viewers have the opportunity to practice along with her, following first to numbers that appear on the screen and then just with her playing. There's plenty of time to play, too - Elsa doesn't simply demonstrate and then move on. During each rhythm there is between 2 and 4 minutes of just slow, steady playing to use as practice time. This provides an excellent opportunity to focus just on getting used to the rhythm.

During the various pattern sections Elsa provides several short zil drills. For nearly every rhythm Elsa demonstrates a section for "arms and hands," simple yet elegant arm movements that can be used with the zil pattern. For those dancers new to finger cymbals, this is an invaluable time to slowly practice the rhythm while integrating movement. It is critical for dancers to not simply sit and play - one must *move* while practicing in order to prepare for dancing while playing and this section will certainly provide both those new to zils and the veterans with drills to accomplish this goal.

There are also demonstrations of "basic steps" for many of the included rhythms. These are meant to simply give viewers an idea of some (of the many) movements that might be performed with the rhythms - the real focus, of course, is on playing the zils and learning the various patterns. The steps are not broken down in too much detail, allowing viewers to focus on the zils and not worry, necessarily, about what is going on with the movement. However, the explanations are clear enough for the viewer to understand each suggestion.

After presenting viewers with the opportunity to practice the patterns with music and then to slowly layer in arms and basic movements, Elsa ups the ante with a series of combinations. The inclusion of the combinations benefits intermediate dancers who, up until this point, may have found the DVD a bit easy. The combinations utilize steps that are a bit more difficult, such as Soheir Zaki drops and traveling hip bumps and pushes with interesting body angles and layers. For each rhythm there are usually at least 2 combinations to try.

"Practice with Music:" Are you ready to just jam with the music? Also included on the DVD is a section of music for each rhythm. From Baladi to Karslima, Elsa has carefully selected a song that viewers can play along with while viewing the pattern (and the accompanying counts for it) on the screen. Nice touches include the inclusion of the title, artist, and album of each song as well as a website vendor for each. A great surprise in this section was the addition of a drum solo by Raquy and Brian Carter which, of course, viewers can play along with or just simply enjoy.

There are also several performances on the DVD. In the first, Elsa dances to an "Arabic mix;" a standard recorded music track. Her zil playing is superb - she really uses the finger cymbals as instruments and it was wonderful to see a dancer perform like that. Listening to her use of zils to interpret and enhance the music will certainly inspire novices and pros alike! The second performance is a lively drum solo with accompaniment by Raquy and Brian. While some may teach that zils should not be played during a drum solo, Elsa does a wonderful job of showing viewers how wonderful the addition of zils at the right time, working along with the drummers, can make a drum solo even more entertaining.

What worked for me:
* I really liked Elsa's technique of switching hands and playing the zils in a different manner to a drummer's interpretation of rhythms on a doumbek. The introduction where Raquay played the rhythm on the doumbek, and then Elsa contrasted it with the same rhythm on the zils, was wonderful to see.I found it challenging at first to switch and play in her style, but it was a refreshingly new way to play and a nice style to add to my repertoire.
* Elsa jumps right in to help students become comfortable moving while playing zils. It was wonderful to see the inclusion of different moves for each pattern. While she recommends students first familiarize themselves with just playing, Elsa spends a great deal of time demonstrating how students can work their way up from playing, to playing while moving just the arms, and then incorporating a full repertoire of movements while zilling.
* The practice with music section was great - I loved being able to play along while having the pattern on the screen in case I forgot where I was with it!
* I have to say I was really, really impressed with Elsa's performance. Regardless of whether or not you like her style of dancing, her zil playing is absolutely superb. Not only can she play incredibly fast and complicated rhythms cleanly but she actually uses the finger cymbals as instruments and plays to compliment and interpret the music as opposed to simply playing along or repeating a memorized rhythm.
* This DVD was a FABULOUS production! The overall look of the DVD's menus was just beautiful. WDNY has added lovely transitions from the main menu to the various sections, too.

What might not work for you:
* Elsa's style of playing without a leading hand might take a bit of time to get used to. If you're just starting with the zils, however, you should be able to pick it up fairly quickly. If you're used to always beginning with a certain hand this might not work for you.
* This is not a "rhythm" type video, exactly - while Middle Eastern rhythms are indeed covered on the DVD they are not broken down into great deal. There is no in-depth explanation, here, of "dums" and "teks" beyond a very basic introduction. It is intended for dancers who are going to play zils while dancing who may not need to know the drum pattern breakdown or want to play a contrasting pattern to that which is being played upon the drum. The rhythms on the zils are explained in terms of counts so if you're looking for a video that describes rhythms in more detail you may need to look elsewhere.
* The steps used in the combinations assume a familiarity with basic belly dance movements. Elsa does not always go into a great amount of detail with these steps, too, although they are clearly demonstrated.

Bellydance W/ Jillina: Drum Solo Choreography Vol 3 Review

Bellydance W/ Jillina: Drum Solo Choreography Vol 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a beginner who has only ever used belly dance DVDs and the drum solo is my favourite part of belly dance so of course I had to have this DVD. This DVD is about 1 hour and 46 minutes and as the title says, it is more a choreography than an instruction of drum solos. I found this to be a wonderful DVD but unlike Jenna's Heartbeat of Belly Dance and Neon's Belly Dance Rhythms Workout, there is no explanation of the rhythms. She does show you fun combinations for the rhythms and it's easy to figure it out on your own but I just like knowing the background on new rhythms.
There aren't many rhythms covered and the combinations are not spread out equally among them either. She gives three combinations for the ayub, two for the hasha and one each for the malfouf and masmoudi. There is an option for instruction and practice for each combination.
There is also a technique section that covers the egyptian shimmy, hip accents (hip drops and such), omi with a twist, hagala, african shimmy, vertical figure eight, and stomach flutter. This section also provides an instruction and practice section for each technique. I love Jillina's instruction and she has wonderful clean and precise movements so along with the music it's actually fun to drill these more basic movements along with her.
I haven't had too much experience with the choreography section yet, as I'm still working on the combinations but it at least looks good. She does break down the steps before going into it.
Another thing I really enjoy bout this DVD is how professional and beautiful everything looks. The background is Middle Eastern inspired and Jillina does all the section barefoot on a rug in front of a mirror. Just the set up is inspiring in itself. There's also a few bonuses such as behind the scenes and two performances.
Overall I would recommend this DVD to anyone who loves drum solos and choreography type of DVDs. I'm not sure if I would recommend this for a complete beginner but I think it is accessible enough that with enough practice great progress can be made. There are certain moves that Jillina expects you to already know that aren't covered in the technique section but they aren't terribly difficult to do by watching her in the instruction segment (such as the hip circle). Still, it may be better to make sure you have a stronger foundation and can execute all the moves properly first. As for more advanced dancers, since I'm quite far from that it's hard for me to say but this DVD could be useful for drilling some rhythm combinations. All in all, I found it to be great fun and definitely not easy for a beginner such as myself.
